Domain name protection
From RCampus Wiki
Don't let your domain name expire. That's the best advise we can give to a domain name owner.
Our experience has shown that once a domain name expires, it will be snatched by domain name warehouses. These companies have made an unethical way of living off the existing website traffic. They snatch almost any domain name that expires and try to make money by adding sponsored links to the site, or by trying to sell it to other or back to you for hundreds of dollars.
Many clubs and groups let their domain name expires for one of these reasons:
- They think they don't need it now and can get it back when they do.
- Miscommunication among group officers.
- Departure of webmaster or other officers.
- Lack of funds (domain name renewal is less than $10/year).
- Not getting the renewal notice from the registrar due to change of email.
So again, whatever you do, don't let your domain name expire.
