The coursework properties page allows faculty to easily build a coursework. This page gives a step-by-step instructions on creating a coursework with descriptions for each coursework property.


Working with coursework

This section describes the usage of coursework for faculty.


Building a coursework

Coursework Title

Enter the coursework title here. This title is associated with the task regardless of the class section. For example, you can create a coursework as: "Chapter 1 Exercises".


Type

Enter the coursework type here. This type is associated with the task regardless of the class section. For example, you can create a coursework as: "Homework".


Inactivate

Coursework cannot be deleted, but it can be inactivated to remove it from view. To inactivate a coursework, check the inactivate box.


Content

This section is for adding the content of the coursework.

  • Description: Enter the coursework description here. You can enter up to 3500 characters.
  • Link to: If additional information is available on the web, enter the web address here.

You can attach documents from the document center to the coursework. The attached documents will be made available to students for viewing or download.


Online Submission Settings

This section is for setting the student submission requirements.

You can decide if the coursework will be graded or not. A grade item is a coursework that will be graded (e.g. projects, exams, homework). A non-grade item is a coursework that is solely used for informational/content purposes (e.g. class notes, handouts, syllabi), or assignments that are not graded (e.g. readings, sample quizzes).

Coursework that are graded will be indicated by a (gradeitem.gif) icon. Coursework that are not graded will be indicated by a (content.gif) icon.

How to take class attendance using coursework

Setting up

  1. Create a coursework with the date of attendance as the coursework title (eg. Nov. 4, 2016).
  2. Select Attendance from the drop down menu for coursework type.
  3. Select "Yes" under Grade settings.
    • You can assign points if students get credit for showing up.
    • If you want to hide it from students, enter a future date under Student access dates.
  4. Click on save.


Taking attendance

  1. Open the class gradebook and select the attendance date.
    • If you assigned points to attendance, enter a value in the points column.
    • You can use different letters to track different attendance options in the letter column. (eg. F = Full attendance, P = Partial attendance, L = Late, E = Excused absence, and X = Absent)
  2. Click on save.


How to assign different category weights

  1. Explain in the class syllabus the weighting for each category. (eg. Homework = 30%, Exams = 50%, Presentation = 20%)
